A city buried under volcanic ash, yet no bodies were found. Where did the people of Akrotiri go?

Despite being called the 'Minoan Pompeii,' Akrotiri had no human remains. Did they all escape or were they erased by the volcano?
In the 16th century BC, the city of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini was buried under volcanic ash. Yet, despite the suddenness of the eruption, no human remains have been found in the excavated areas. The city's high level of sophistication, with complex multi-story buildings, wall paintings, and furniture left behind, suggests a well-organized society. Still, its inhabitants seem to have vanished completely. Did they have a premonition of the disaster and flee? Or were their bodies obliterated by the intense heat of the eruption?
