Renowned author Ambrose Bierce, known for his sardonic wit, decided to tour old Civil War battlefields at the age of 71. After reaching Texas, he sent a letter to his friend, dated Dec. 26, 1913, saying he was 'off to Mexico' for an 'unknown destination'. He was never heard from again. Yet, there are unverified reports of him being seen in Mexico, a journey of 800 miles, the very next day. Despite extensive investigations and searches, Bierce's disappearance remains one of history's most baffling mysteries.
